Lindsay Broughton featured in TIFF Event

Item 8 A Photo AWireService.ca Press Release (08/19/2014) Toronto, Ontario – The 4th Annual Film + Music Social (FMS14) is pleased to announce rising country star Lindsay Broughton as a featured artist for this year’s event. FMS14 was created by Skylar Entertainment, a Canadian PR agency who will also be celebrating its 10th Anniversary at the invite only event which takes place during the Toronto International Film Festival.

“Since the festivities are to take place at the Rock N’ Horse Saloon, it seemed fitting to announce a country artist as the first featured performer,” says Skylar Entertainment’s Diane Foy.” “I had seen Lindsay perform live a few years back and was very impressed. With Curve Music and Sonic Envy as Producing Partners, you can be sure that the talent at this year’s event will be top level.”
Country music singer/songwriter Broughton has been making waves in the Canadian music scene as the recipient of the 2013 Country Music Association of Ontario Rising Star Award. She has had eight songs featured in the hit CBC show Heartland and has had her songs covered by multiple artists…all before the release of her debut album.

Broughton released her self-titled EP in 2012, which rose to #1 as the top selling Canadian Country album in Canada in 2013. Now, her debut full length album, Take Me There, is due to be released this fall. Lindsay’s new single and Video “Take Me There” is at Radio and CMT now and the song has already climbed its way into the Top 50 Country Radio Charts.

Brea is currently charting on Trax (#74) with her latest – “Hell On High Heels”. Brea has consistently been charting with her music over the last year! Since her last release (Little Back Road) to radio, Robyn has graduated from high school and has been busy writing, performing in her hometown of Uxbridge, Ontario and recently taped a segment for a Cogeco TV country music special that will air in the fall.
Songwriting is the magic in Robyn’s heart and she writes songs with a seasoned eloquence beyond her years. She has a fascination with the ocean and believes like people ‘what you see on the surface is different than what is underneath’. Her lyrics reflect her unique view of the world.

Robyn has made the semi-finals for this years Magna Hoedown ShowdownTalent Competition! These will take place on Saturday, September 6 at the Aurora Ribfest (Machell Park, Aurora, ON) – we wish her all the best!

“I’ve been looking for open doors – searching for fairy tales. Turning over every rock and stone, but the wind won’t catch my sails. I know times get tougher now, but that don’t mean I’m slowing down. Who is fate to draw my lines – I’m following sunshine.”

Open Letter to Venue owners and managers
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
Dear venue owners and managers,

You may have noticed a decline in attendance, lower quality of music, and generally unappreciative performers. I feel your pain and have some suggestions for you so that you get the highest quality of music, more attendance, and happiness in your life.

We professional musicians–the humble, the great–know we are servants.
We bring joy and soul to the darkest corners of downtown, and then shlep our axes through the back alleys.

Pay us.

That’s right! Monetary compensation for a service which we have trained for years to be able to provide. Some of us even went to school to better understand the magic that we bring. Do you understand how disheartening it is to watch the doorman go home with most of our cover?

Weed out the amateurs. We don’t mind.

Don’t feel you should pay lower quality musicians? We agree! Take a little time to make sure your acts are the real deal. Feel free to listen to the music. Look at our resumes. You are a curator.

Have a decent PA system.

If we bring our own PA, it might not be the best kind for your specific venue. We want to sound our best so people are comfortable STAYING. You want that too.

Feed us.

Musicians shouldn’t have to spend money to stay standing at a gig. It is common courtesy to provide food.

Don’t give us “drink tickets”.

It’s like giving an allowance to a 23 year old. It’s patronizing to
1) be paid in beer (Is that how you pay your bartenders?) and
2) have you assumed we are gluttonous drunks.

Promote us.

We will do our fair share of promo, but unless you want us to only bring our friends and family (half of which will want to be on the guest list and none of which will return without us), do a little work. Get us on your website calendar (with a picture, mini-bio, and link to our website). Put up our flyer in your bathroom.

We have fans, but the steady working musician can’t be expected to bring them to every gig. I’m sure there are fans of your venue. Bring them out! What’s more, if you can build a reputation for always having amazing musicians, people won’t even care who is playing. They will show up.

Stop offering us “exposure”.

To what are you exposing us? Our own fans who we painstakingly convinced to come support us? Unless you have a large, built-in audience (e.g. a festival) that is there to see what great new act you have procured, “exposure” means nothing to us. NOTHING. (And if you are running a festival, you should be paying musicians anyway because that’s probably why people are there.)

Okay, take a deep breath. You are probably pretty angry right now and want to switch to Pay-to-Play just to spite us (if you haven’t already). We know that you are running a business. We are too. You need to make a profit. There are expenses. And unless you are happy with a noob garage band who will trash your lovely establishment or drink until horizontal because that is their only payment, we are one of those expenses. You have a right to expect excellence. We WANT to provide you with quality entertainment. We WANT people to keep ordering food and drink all night so they stay and watch us. We WANT to build a rapport with you. So please stop pushing us away by making gigging a miserable experience.

Treat us well and we will be your bards, your court jesters, and your geisha.

Because, remember, when you are counting on word of mouth, we hold the microphone.

With love,
A Working Class Musician

Canadian Songwriter Event in Nashville

Call for Canadian Songwriters and early announcement of our annual Canadian Songwriter Event – October 25th in Nashville, TN. The Headliners will be announced in the coming weeks…so be on the lookout for that announcement.

Welcome my friends north of the border and those who now live here in Nashville and other parts unknown. I am so excited to pass along the 1st of several emails leading up to our event. We had over 30 Canadian songwriters in 2013. Here are some details / logistics for the event:

  • You must reply to this email to reserve a spot in the lineup.
  • If you want to be in a round (of 4) with your buddies, let me know who you want to play in your line up.
  • Doors will open at 5:30 PM and music will start at 6:00 PM and will conclude at 11:00 PM – 5 hours of music.
  • With so many wanting to play we have to limit each songwriter or duo to 2 maybe 3 songs – a total of 15 minute each
  • Songwriters will introduce themselves briefly and play 2 songs back to back
  • I am asking that all songwriters try to arrive before the music begins to help support the earlier rounds and to have time to grab a bite to eat, etc. Nobody likes to good first, but someone has to, so come early and support your fellow songwriters.
  • This is a potluck / bring a covered dish to share event. Consider it dinner, so whatever you would normally spend on dinner, spend on something to bring and share. Chips/dip is not a covered dish. We furnish dessert and bring your own drink. BEER is furnished
  • If you need a piano, I have one just let me know and I will have it available.
  • After you play, or before you play, please move your guitar back to your car…to help with limited space. The Master Bedroom is our GREEN Room for prep before playing…please be prepared to take your seat as quickly as possible.
  • This is your event. Please spread the word to as many people as possible. We have had over 100 people flow through our house on any given night. Have people send a confirming email to me at Terry.Seay@itsallaboutZmusic.com

We are taking donations at the door from all who attend including you songwriters who are able togive. All money collected will be given to the Toronto Chapter NSAI to help expand the Tin Pan North event held in Toronto in May.

WANDA AND I ARE PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE THAT WE WILL AGAIN MATCH ALL DONATIONS DOLLAR-FOR-DOLLAR.
